Development Intern

Location: Prince George’s County, Maryland 

Summary: Progressive Maryland was founded to empower communities to act for social and economic justice by developing leaders and cultivating allies in order to build a grassroots movement with the power to advance economic, racial, and environmental equity. We are made up of over 125,000 individual members and supporters and dozens of affiliated religious, community and labor organizations statewide. 

 

Development Intern: Interns for the Grants and Development Department will be given an opportunity to learn the fundraising and grant application process and have a chance to contribute to it while helping to sustain and grow funding for PMD.  

 

These positions will be overseen by the Development Director. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Undergo an immersion training during initial onboarding to understand basic terminology and processes essential to the grant application and funding process, both proprietary and general 
  • Perform prospect research for, and in some cases perform initial outreach to, prospective individual major gift donors. This research should include- campaign donations, candidates supported, level of association with PMD and our campaigns, donations to similar organizations and causes, capacity to give and geographic location
  • Become familiar with current and past funders of PMD 
  • Become familiar with all campaigns and programs of PMD to better understand their revenue needs and streams 
  • Assisting in the maintenance and organization of the the grants and development database / virtual folder 
  • Conduct prospect research in Foundation Center online and other sources and propose to the Development Specialist and Development Director potential opportunities
  • Have open communication with new prospects in order to set meetings with the Development Specialist and Development Director and said prospects
  • As grants and funds are received maintain relationships with funders through appropriate stewardship 
  • Assist in information gathering from internal and external sources as grant proposals are formulated 
  • Participate in the vetting and editing of proposals prior to submission to funders
  • Assist in maintenance of grants calendar
  • Learn and adhere to the PMD Grants SOP
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned 
 

Qualifications:

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Strong time-management skills
  • Ability to work well both independently and as a team player
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office and Google suite
  • Ability to learn new digital platforms quickly
  • All positions require a laptop and phone.

Pay and Position Details: This is an internship position, meant to last one semester, with an estimated 10 hours per week. Pay will be $20/hr.
